Early reviews of This Forgotten Land

Early reviews of This Forgotten Land

Here's some early reviews and quotes for my upcoming album 'This Forgotten Land' that will be released November 3rd on Tona Serenad — Pre-orders are now available via Klangbox.

“Spooked slow motion circus mannerisms conjure a mad whirligig at the end of time. Ambient traces of Debussy and Satie inform his piano.” Uncut

“Haunting beautiful and ethereal, this is a wonderful album from a truly distinctive and singular visionary.” Future Music

“His album is a treat. Echoing piano is at its core but there’s a spooked vibe, throughout. Not horror filmic, more like you’d wandered into the past by accident, or come across a derelict building that once used to be alive with voices and laughter. Bye musters his own uncanny musical world, a forgotten land, indeed.” The Arts Desk

“His studio is an analogue world of synths, pianos, celesta, Mellotron and organs, and his music alludes to the strange, romantic mood you get when you hear old merry go rounds, or mechanical instruments in small amusements parks, and abandoned places.” The Wire

“An atmospheric experience.” The Ransom Note

“Channels everything from eerie midways to the manic Swordfishtrombones era of Tom Waits.Self-Titled

“Hushed atmospherics are underpinned by superbly fluid musicality. A work in perpetual evolution, it welcomes you in via meditative, inward citations.” Clash

“Beautiful.” Headphone Commute

Self-Titled Magazine premiers 'Galloping Waves'

Self-Titled Magazine premiers 'Galloping Waves'

'Galloping Waves', taken off my forthcoming album 'This Forgotten Land', is being premiered by Self-Titled Magazine and spoke to them about the inspiration for the song and this is my reply:

"Circus music has always inspired me—the strange romantic mood you are drawn into when you hear old merry-go-rounds, music boxes, player pianos, calliope, mechanical instruments, small tivoli’s, and amusement parks and abandoned places like Coney Island.

I’m very fascinated by what music made by ghosts would sound like. Maybe it’d be filtered in some strange, distorted way, blurred from a distance… like a memory of something you forgot coming back… hidden cities under the water… with a sea horse orchestra playing."

'Melt' (Official Video) available now

Headphone Commute has premiered the video for 'Melt' taken off my upcoming piano album This Forgotten Land that will be released November 3rd on Tona Serenad Records.

"Peculiarly otherworldly, serenely haunting, and utterly unforgettable, its melodies linger long after its conclusion, their atmosphere a magical mist that can never quite be apprehended. Out of time, but just in time, it confirms Matti Bye as a vital composer of visionary, cinematic scope. ‘This Forgotten Land’ will endure, in fact, because it sounds like it’s always been among us."

This is the 2nd edition of the soundtrack to the film Superswede by Matti Bye, printed in a limited run of 300 special edition copies.  The second edition features new front and back cover artwork from the first edition.

Ronnie Peterson nicknamed “Superswede” was the fastest formula 1-driver in the 70s who never became a world champion. In this emotional film we trace Ronnie's life back to where it all started. From the small town of Almby, where he met his beloved Barbro, to the seductive jet-set and glamour of the racing circuits in the Formula 1-circus. They were like fish out of water trying to fit in, in a world of money and fame. Ronnie, just a down to earth working class hero with the looks of a movie star and gifted with a talent for speed. Suddenly he was mingling with the rich and the famous, and the stunning Barbro who always was by his side through all the hardships, when Ronnie challenged the unwritten rules of the game, binding him to unfair contracts and commercial issues. Ronnie's incredible talent eventually takes him to the top, being the fastest driver of them all, but when he stands on the threshold of becoming a true contender for the world championship, fate intervenes one tragic September Sunday at Monza, 1978. A day when Sweden came to a standstill and the entire world held its breath. Starring Nina Kennedy, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sir Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and John Watson among others. With music composed by Matti Bye.

The soundtrack to Häxan voted for the Authors' Jury at Rimusicazioni Film Festival

The soundtrack to Häxan voted for the Authors' Jury at Rimusicazioni Film Festival

The soundtrack by Matti Bye composed to Häxan: Whichcraft Through the Ages from 1922 was voted for the Authors' Jury at 2016 Rimusicazioni Film Festival with the motivation:

“Matti Bye’s soundtrack for the film "Häxan" stood out for the way it enhanced the content of the film’s sequences to maximum effect, intimately complementing the theme, atmosphere and various elements in the scenes. The central musical theme, while remaining consistent, ranges between highly evocative free allusions and thematic uniformity in a bewitching flow of wide-ranging sequences, without ever losing expressive tension.”
